Think Big To Become Big


If you are following me or any other leaders in this wonderful industry, you’ve undoubtedly heard this thousands of times. We hear about the importance of mindset and attitude in almost every personal development book we read or listen to. Think And Grow Rich, The Power Of Positive Thinking, etc. You know it, but do you practice it?

In the practice of our lives, we are much more aware of the feedback that tells us we made a mistake, we failed, we aren’t as good as our leader, … in other words, we aren’t BIG.

20130918-083340.jpgThe fact is that high achievement always takes place in the presence of high expectations. You can only achieve something great if you know you can.

In the long run, you’ll always hit what you aim for. So why not aim high? Even if you don’t hit it the first time, if you continue to try and believe you can hit it, you will.

Have the courage to follow your dreams. It’s the first step towards attaining your destiny. If you can dream it, you can do it.

Big thinking always precedes big achievement.


Lessons Learned From A 9.997 Year Old

Thank you so much for stopping by. I just found this post I wrote a couple months ago and never published. After re-reading it, it is too powerful not to post it. So disregard the timeframe, the message holds true.

Today was a profound one for me. I need to get to sleep, but I feel like I have to get these feelings drafted, even if I don’t get to proof/publish this tonight. I apologize in advance for the length, but I am pretty wound up and I’m expecting to get wordy.

-travel was awesome, despite running late and having to give up a first class upgrade. Awesome persons 1 & 2 were United flight attendants from each flight.
-Colton found souvenir for mom before he picked his first
-no rain in AL!
-rental car had no cars Colt wanted, but awesome persons 3 & 4 were working at National today in Birmingham and they went to find him a Mustang.
-stopped outside airport to find address for Stadium to learn the game was delayed from rain. Colt happily said we should go to that museum place I found and then go to the game later.
Colton with a piece of history-Barber’s Vintage Motorsports Museum was amazing. Awesome person 5 was working today.
-after museum, we discussed baseball. Weather still beautiful BTW. Options for original college game or minor league. He changed his mind to minor league because they were continuing last night’s rain suspended game, and then another one.
-turns out the stadium is less than one month old and beautiful. As we are walking up, another family gives us free tickets to the game. They were great but I’m not counting them as awesome because they didn’t have a dramatic impact on the day, just made it a little nicer.
-standing in line waiting for gates to open, we meet awesome person 6, the last of the day. He runs a small charity called Written Word Donations (go give their Facebook page a Like) that seems to help quite a few causes, but their mission is listed on FB as getting bibles to people seeking the Word of God. He and Colton talked baseball for 30 minutes in line. He goes to events all over to get memorabilia signed, so he can auction it for his charity. He gives Colton a baseball card for the Barons catcher and a top 10 prospect for the White Sox. Once we get inside, he also buys him a program. We go down to the field to look around, and Colt sees Mike Blanke chatting with a friend during warm ups and gets his autograph on the card. Awesome! I missed the picture (not awesome).
Colt ready for the game-we spend a few innings sitting in the front row by 3rd and Colton gets a foul ball.
-I tell Colt as the 1st game is nearing the end, we should go say goodbye and thank you to our new friend Roger again in case he leaves. We go over there and Colt gets to meet the mascot, gets an autographed souvenir from Babe Ruff, and while we are talking, Roger gives him another card he just got signed from a pitcher than has been bouncing back and forth between the Sox and the Barons. Colt is getting cold, so we say goodbye, lots more thanks, swap cards, and head for the car

That is just the setup. Here is where the learning starts! 3 min into our hour drive to our hotel, Colt is asleep and I start thinking about a day I was nearly crying about just 21 hours prior. My son sees the entire world through a positive filter, and as a result, that is exactly what he what he experiences. He could have been upset about the weather forecast, the fact we only got 1 seat upgrade to first class and he wanted to stay with me, the two hour layover en route, or the delayed baseball game, or the fact that i missed the photo opp with his new hero on the Barons. Instead, he raved about everything: the Mustang rental, the awesome cars and motorcycles at the museum, watching Porsches race on the track. This realization reinforced what I’ve been seeing for the past 3-4 years, since I made a conscious effort to be more positive about my life. I believe completely that what you think about, comes about, but when you are surrounded regularly with negative people, who just see your results through their negative filter and resent even more, it is natural to doubt. My son reinforced for me today, that I control my own destiny, and that seeing life through a positive filter is the only way to life it. I hope he realizes the power he has now, before the negatively of the world around him is able to weaken his spirit. And I commit to see that he does!

Success Tip: LOVE Your Work

I know that is easier said than done because I went through it, but you must figure out how. You’ll never achieve real success unless you like what you are doing.

Success in its highest and noblest form calls for peace of mind, enjoyment, and happiness which comes only when you find the work that you like best. You don’t pay the price for success. You enjoy the price for success.

Prove Your Success To Improve Your Success

Thanks for visiting. You’re going to love this post for how powerful it will be if you do this exercise. Please share, then do the exercise this week and come back to let me know the results.

Do you consider yourself a success? Even if you do, I’ll bet you’ve had periods where you felt like you were not winning, even in the area where you consider yourself most successful. This is because we are so focused on success, that immediately after a win, we move on to the next goal/objective without ever stopping to recognize the accomplishment. Ironically, the most successful of us are the worst at this because we feel like those goals must keep getting bigger, or achieved more quickly, so we don’t want to waste time celebrating when there is work to be done.

Woman Making Her ListAs I mentioned in my last post about taking control and loving your work, I’ve been reading Brendan Burchard’s The Charge and he introduces this idea in chapter 3 with the story of a very successful woman who was feeling like she had lost her edge and was no longer effective. He had her compose a two-page list of accomplishments for each of the past 10 years. She described this exercise as miserable, but one of the most powerful activities she had ever performed in her life.

Even if you are feeling successful, I encourage you to do this, even if just about your current job or business. Block an hour (you may need more) to go through this exercise. By setting a minimum length for your list, you’ll be forced to include some smaller accomplishments, which are those most often overlooked. I am warning you now this will NOT be easy, but it will be enlightening!a story about an incredibly successful woman who was feeling like she had lost her edge.

Once you have your list, I further recommend you develop a system for tracking your wins, big and small, at least weekly. You can keep a journal for your business and require yourself to write entities at least weekly. Or you can keep a list of your goals and document your accomplishments toward each of them as they happen, and review it at least weekly. There are other methods too, you just have to find something you can stick to.

So, regardless of where you are in your business, take this exercise and apply it to at least one aspect of your life. If you are just starting out, apply this to your job or a personal goal or anything, just to create the habit of recognizing and celebrating your achievements, large and small. Every win is important because they create a feeling of accomplishment which will help you be more confident and improve your performance.

4 Steps To Love Your Work

Do you enjoy your work? Whether you are in business for yourself, or an employee for someone else, you should enjoy what you are doingevery day, for your well being and that of those around you. Yes, this blog is about helping people start a part-time home business to improve the quality of their lives, but even if you’ve determined that isn’t for you, you should strive to ensure you love what you are doing.

I am currently reading Brendan Burchard’s The Charge: Activating the 10 Human Drives That Make You Feel Alive, and I was amazed by a point he made in his discussion of the first drive. He states that less than 20 percent of workers worldwide say they are actively engaged and enjoying The Chargetheir work. This statistic staggered me. I am blessed to have a full time job I love, and a part time home business my wife and I share that I love even more. But I can still remember my previous job, before I learned about the home-based business industry, when I dreaded going to work each day. That was a low point in my career, that had nasty effects on several aspects of my life, but that’s a story for another post on the importance of enjoying what you do.

I don’t want to spoil The Charge for you (and I strongly recommend picking up a copy and reading it ASAP), so I am only going to cover one contributor to this worldwide disgruntlement here, which is email. If you’ve read First Things Firstany time management books, such as First Things First from the late Stephen Covey, or been to any time management classes, you’ve undoubtedly already heard the recommendation to disable email notifications on your mail client and mobile devices and only check your email and pre-scheduled times throughout the day. We’ve gotten a bit ridiculous about email these days, assuming that an email sent equates to an email processed. The corporation I work for sent all of us to a multi-day time management training class (a huge expense) focused specifically on how to use our mail client more efficiently, and we spent an entire day configuring it to prevent interruptions during the productive times during our day. Yet the majority of my co-workers, including management, still work under the expectation that sending an email to me means I have processed it within an hour or so. Shame on us!

I have four recommendations about your handling of email to make you more effective and your work life more enjoyable:

  • Make it clear in the people that you deal with at work, that if they have something that needs to be processed critically, they need to confirm receipt, typically via a phone call during which they speak with me. While that, too, is an interruption, some of us do have to deal with time-sensitive issues to be successful in our work, and I find this causes people to redefine what is really “critical.”
  • I like to make a conscious effort to process email in a FIFO (first in, first out) order, as this avoids setting a precedent of immediate response if I pop into my email during my scheduled time slot and answer emails received within the past few minutes (I receive a LOT of emails!).
  • My final recommendation, as implied already, is to schedule email processing time slots in your day. It goes without saying that you want to have your day’s agenda in order before you open your inbox for the first time each day. I like to work through lunch, so I find this is a good time to hit it again, and then at the end of the day to read/respond to remaining items and identify items that need to be priorities for tomorrow.
  • I like to leave my inbox empty at the end of the day, but even if that isn’t possible for you, just these simple steps will make it much more manageable.

The #1 Reason For A 90 Day Blitz

Everyone acknowledges that a blitz produces increased results, but most people get a negative impression of the word because it sounds hard. And it is! The idea of a blitz is to get focused on a single objective for a specific amount of time. This is not the way we typically work in our “multi-tasking” world, where we normally bounce between multiple activities and never accomplish any of them. I’m going to help you understand the benefits of a blitz, and how to use them effectively.

In professional sales organizations, blitzes or prospecting days are commonly used to increase the pipeline. A portion of the sales team, typically inside sales who are trained on the phone, will dedicate an entire day to calling their entire prospect list about one specific topic to seek new opportunities. The results from taking a group of sales professionals, who already dial their current prospect list daily, and giving them a focus, a deadline, and a goal, is astounding.

Are you ready to change your life?But what does that mean for you in your home business. Actually, I believe it means the exact same thing. Our lives take us in many different directions on a daily basis. It is very easy to lose focus. You call a prospect, have a great conversation, they ask a question, it gets you thinking about how often you hear that question and should write a blog entry to address it, you hang up (without a close), start writing, do your SEO, find your stock photo, post, syndicate, and suddenly your two hours you dedicated to your business are gone and you have nothing to show for it. This is the #1 thing a blitz addresses.

A blitz provides the focus, the deadline, and usually a goal for you and your team to achieve. In my home business, we are currently doing a 90 Day Blitz, which happens to coincide with the qualification period for our first National Expansion Team, where we’ll be working directly with Larry Thompson. During the blitz, we have committed to work significantly above our usual level of effort, foregoing sleep and many of the time freedoms which justified our journey into home business. However, the key factor is that it is only for 90 days. We have a definite end date, which enables us to go hard, knowing exactly how much further we have to go. Ever noticed how much easier it is to maintain or increase your pace as you near the end of a run? When you should be the most tired, you speed up, because you know how much further you have to go. The same holds true here.

During this blitz, everyone on the team (and across teams including most of the company) are focused on one thing: talking to as many people as possible every day to see who is open to the possibility of a better life. We are all encouraged to speak to as many people as possible during our production time, with the intention of simply setting appointments to follow up with a tool to show them the business. With this focus, we are talking to more people, creating more interest, generating more momentum, being more diligent in our use of tools (instead of wasting time presenting/convincing), and achieving more results.

A blitz like this is not easy. My friend and mentor, Ray Higdon, says this is “not for weenies.” Not for a professional salesperson who normally spends 8 hours dialing, or for the home business owner managing a FT job and a family, many of whom started their business with the promise from some internet guru of never having to talk to anyone. It isn’t easy, but the results speak for themselves.

If you have an opportunity to participate in a blitz like this with your company, do it! If not, start one with your team or with some of the other leaders. Independence – What Does It Mean?

This year, Independence Day, or The 4th of July, as I prefer to call it, conjured up some different thoughts this year. Typically, my thoughts are just about patriotism and pride, and gratefulness for all those that defend our freedom. This year, however, I also had some thoughts about personal independence and that means to our family and others. Freedom

For us, independence is the ability to do what we want, when we want, and with whom we want. I want my children to grow up believing they can make their dream life if they are willing to work hard at it. There is an opportunity out there for anyone to get excited about and leverage to make their dreams come true. That is why I’ve fallen in love with this industry and want to introduce it to all of my friends.

But what does it mean for everyone else? Everyone has their own definition, but regardless of that that is, I think a lack of time or money are the two biggest hindrances. Those are two of the biggest benefits that this business can deliver, if you are willing to work consistently and persistently. One problem I see is that people who have a tendency to be pessimistic or impatient, give up before they give the business a chance to prove what is possible.

It is the job of the leader to prevent that by helping them to realize the possibilities early and ensure they are prepared to deal with the challenges they are sure to face. If I can help them to quick success, even a little, and then show them what is possible with continued effort over years, I can dramatically improve their chances of success and of achieving their dreams. And that is my commitment: to step up my efforts to help my teammates to see that quick team growth and income, and then guide their personal development to keep them involved long enough to see the momentum.

Scheduling Success Around The Full Time Job

This is a short post I’m jotting down before I forget. I was reading a post over at that got me motivated to write tonight, and then I started thinking about the cause for my lack of success this past week which gave me my topic. One of the biggest challenges part time networkers face is the frequency that their full time job trumps the success-building activities on their daily calendar.

Hopefully, if you’ve gotten this far (this far being that you are actually reading personal development content because you realize it is critical to your success), then you also know that you absolutely must have a detailed calendar that includes all of the actions you want to make to grow your business. You realize your success depends on both income-producing and non-income-producing activities (like reading this blog), and you must schedule them both if you expect them to get done. I’ll discuss these two types of activities in a future post because it is important you separate them and prioritize them appropriately.

But back to the calendar, my best tip for developing your business calendar to protect it from the spontaneity of life or fluidity of your full time job is to group activities that must occur within certain times and those that do not. For example, I am able to read personal development content and write blog posts at any time of the day or night, and I just have to trade a bit of sleep for that time. On the other hand, making prospecting calls, needs to occur at a reasonable time for a phone to be ringing, at least if I don’t want to get yelled at and waste a lead. By creating blocks of time on my calendar with similar category activities, when my life takes an unexpected turn that prevents me from completing some of my scheduled activity, I am able to quickly move those blocks to the correct areas on that calendar to allow to be completed during reasonable timeframes. Before I started doing this, I used to schedule one block of time to work my business. When an unexpected meeting, or a spontaneous date night with my daughter arose, I would move the block, but then when I sat down to complete the activities during the new window, many of the tasks weren’t possible, at least if I wanted to avoid the browbeating for calling a friend at midnight to talk to them about my business.

I hope that little tip makes sense so you can put it to good use immediately. In fact, pull up tomorrow’s calendar right now and separate your business activity in tasks that are and are not time sensitive. I like to use parenthesis after the task name to indicate the potential window for completing the actions included.

Time To Get Started

If you waited until January to set your goals for the new year, you are already behind the power curve, but that doesn’t mean you should wait until next year, it means turn off the football game for an hour and get to work! If you want create fireworks in your life, keep reading. If you don’t, you will look back on this day and wish you had.Fireworks

Few people enjoy goal setting, until they practice it for a while and experience the powerful results it brings. The fact is that goal setting is required if you intend to be successful. So let’s get down to it!

While setting goals is about setting course for the future, it is essential that you briefly look back to prepare for this exercise. If you set proper goals in the past, this will be much easier, but even if you didn’t, you need to spend a few minutes reviewing the past to determine where you were successful and where you could improve. First, recognize your successes, in all aspects of your life. Write each down and be grateful for them, whether it is to God, to those that helped you achieve, to yourself for the extra effort you exerted, or all of the above. Finally, I like to acknowledge the behaviors that led to the successes so you can continue those moving forward. Then, you must also revisit the areas where you achieved less than you wanted. It is very important that you don’t look at these as failures or allow them to bring you down. Instead try to objectively recognize the things you neglected to do or did poorly that affected the results. Again, record these valuable lessons.

For your new goals, use your recent results and carry over the goals that are still relevant and revisit those that need to be adjusted, hopefully to make them bigger. There are literally thousands of books, articles and blog posts on how to create effective goals. I prefer to not make goal setting a daunting task, so here are my recommendations.

First, make sure that your goals cover all aspects of your life. For example, I have goals for health, family, my job and my business.

Second, if you are new to setting goals in a particular area, I find it easier to set goals in shorter timeframes. Even now, I prefer to have quarterly as well as annual goals. The annual goal aims your mind at the target but the quarterly goals provide checkpoints to enjoy success or adjust course to ensure you stay on track.

Third, don’t underestimate your abilities. Setting easy goals you can achieve without getting outside your comfort zone is almost as bad as not having any at all. Again, if this is a new diet/relationship/job/business, at least set a goal and an additional stretch goal. Just be aware of the risk of allowing yourself to relax when you meet your initial target.

Fourth, make goals that are clear and measurable, so you can remain focused and have very objective criterial to determine your progress toward it. There is value in subjective goals too, such as strengthening my relationship with God, but I find they are more difficult because I spend more time thinking about what is required to get me there. So try to make them as quantifiable as possible.

That’s enough for one post, or you’ll get overwhelmed and not actually do it. Did I mention your goals MUST be written down? They must be on paper, preferably, at least the initial draft, in your own handwriting. Or else they aren’t real!
